House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington has announced his support for Majority Leader Steve Scalise's bid to become the next Speaker of the House. Arrington joined House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan in endorsing Scalise, stating that both candidates possess the necessary conservative convictions, character, and leadership qualities to be effective speakers.
In a statement, Arrington said, "Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise both have the conservative convictions, character, and leadership qualities to be an effective Speaker for the Republican-led House." He also emphasized the need for Republicans to rally around Scalise in order to unite the party and advance their conservative policies.
Arrington acknowledged that both candidates received substantial support in the conference-wide contest, but Scalise emerged as the winner, earning the nomination as Speaker Designate. Arrington urged his Republican colleagues to join him, Jordan, and others in securing the 217 votes needed to elect Scalise as the Speaker of the People's House.
The chairman highlighted several pressing issues that require strong conservative leadership, including the security crisis at the Southern border, the escalating conflict in the Middle East, and the nation's impending sovereign debt crisis. Arrington believes that Scalise is the right person to address these challenges and lead the House in tackling them.
Arrington concluded by saying, "With a security crisis at our Southern border, an escalating conflict in the Middle East, and a nation barreling towards a sovereign debt crisis, the stakes have never been higher to provide strong, conservative leadership for our country."
As the House prepares for the election of the next Speaker, Arrington's endorsement adds weight to Scalise's campaign. The support of influential committee chairs like Arrington and Jordan could prove crucial in garnering the necessary votes for Scalise's election.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Scalise can secure the support of his fellow Republicans and reach the required majority of votes. The upcoming election will determine who will assume the role of Speaker of the House and lead the Republican-led House in pursuing their conservative agenda.
