Lubbock, TX – A ceremony for the I-27 signage was held by the Texas Department of Transportation and the Ports-to-Plains Alliance, featuring remarks from House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington. Chairman Arrington highlighted the significance of the Ports-to-Plains Corridor, stating it "will enhance the future of rural America and strengthen our nation’s food security and energy dominance". He emphasized the economic benefits, noting it would "generate over $50 billion of economic impact" for Texas.
Senator Ted Cruz also spoke, praising the dedication of Texans and expressing pride in leading the Senate effort for the I-27. Cruz anticipates further progress as the full construction of the corridor continues.
The designation of the Ports-to-Plains Corridor as a future Interstate route came in 2022 following Arrington's legislative efforts. By 2024, the interstate segments were renamed I-27, allowing access to federal funding. The project is projected to significantly impact Texas's GDP and create thousands of jobs.
