House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington delivered testimony to the House Rules Committee, emphasizing the significance of sticking to the guidelines set forth in the House-passed budget resolution. The FY25 Concurrent Budget Resolution is seen as a vehicle to implement President Trump's America-First agenda.
In his prepared remarks, Arrington stated, “In the most historic election of our lifetime, Americans resoundingly elected President Trump and a Republican-led Congress to reverse course on the failed policies of the last four years.” He suggested that unregulated spending and flawed economic strategies have weakened the economy and increased the cost of living for families.
Arrington highlighted the House's budget resolution as an opportunity to cut spending, promote growth, and establish a fiscally sound path for the nation. He added, “We lock in tax cuts for hardworking families and small businesses; open up American energy production, rein in regulatory overreach,” and mentioned several other areas addressed by the resolution.
He noted that the House budget resolution aims to reduce spending by at least $1.5 trillion. He criticized the Senate's resolution for not meeting the same targets, stating, “It fell far short of the spending reduction targets in the House bill.”
Arrington warned of the risks of adding to the debt, quoting historic figures like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Ben Franklin, emphasizing the consequences of incurring debt. He said, “Our out-of-control deficit spending and unsustainable debt is the greatest threat to our country and our children’s future.”
He urged leaders to advance a reconciliation bill that includes President Trump's full agenda by saying, “we must advance a budget reconciliation bill that includes the entirety of President Trump’s America-First agenda—not just tax cuts, or border and defense funding, or deregulation and unleashing American energy production.”
Arrington stressed the importance of adhering to the House’s budget resolution principles, noting, “If we do, we will preserve the blessings of liberty and prosperity for our children and grandchildren.”
