House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington expressed his dissatisfaction with the Senate's recent amendment to the House-approved budget resolution. He emphasized the urgency of addressing fiscal issues, praising former President Trump's efforts to eliminate wasteful spending and achieve a balanced federal budget.
Chairman Arrington said, "In order to bring down prices and restore fiscal sanity in Washington, President Trump has been working at warp speed to root out billions in wasteful and fraudulent spending, right-sizing the bloated bureaucracy, and pushing Congress to balance the federal budget."
The House, aligning with Trump's "America First" agenda, had passed a budget resolution focusing on tax cuts, funding for border and defense, deregulation, energy production, and spending cuts aimed at reducing the national debt. Arrington emphasized the need for these measures to stabilize America's fiscal trajectory.
Describing the Senate's response as inadequate, Arrington noted, "The Senate response was unserious and disappointing, creating $5.8 trillion in new costs and a mere $4 billion in enforceable cuts, less than one day’s worth of borrowing by the federal government." He also raised concerns about direct scoring of tax policy without enforceable offsets.
Arrington highlighted the severity of the national debt situation, stating, "Our nation’s debt and interest death spiral are well underway with world war levels of indebtedness and interest payments exceeding defense spending."
Pointing towards a collaborative approach to address fiscal concerns, he affirmed, "I am committed to working with President Trump, House leadership, and my Senate counterparts to address these concerns and ensure the final reconciliation bill makes America safe, prosperous, and fiscally responsible again."
Quoting James Madison, Arrington concluded with a call to action to tackle the debt issue, stating, “James Madison said it best, ‘a public debt is a public curse.’ We must have the political courage to get our fiscal house in order, Reverse the Curse of a sovereign debt crisis, and preserve the American promise for our children and grandchildren before it’s too late.”
