House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington has reiterated his support for sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) following the House's approval of H.R.23, known as the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act. This legislation mandates that the President impose sanctions on ICC officials who take legal action against U.S. citizens or allies, including Israel.
Chairman Arrington stated, "The International Criminal Court lacks any formal jurisdiction to infringe on the sovereign authority of any democratic country or its people." He further emphasized his commitment to challenging what he termed "phony warrants" issued by the ICC against Israeli public officials and expressed his ongoing support for Israel's right to self-defense.
In past congressional sessions, Arrington supported similar legislation which passed in the House but did not proceed in a Senate controlled by Democrats. In May 2024, he criticized the ICC's decision to issue arrest warrants for high-ranking Israeli officials, including Israel’s Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. In response, Arrington called on the Biden administration to enforce sanctions akin to those imposed on June 11, 2020, which targeted individuals linked with the court.
