WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) has called for urgent action to address the rampant issue of improper payments and fraud within government spending. In an op-ed for The Hill, Chairman Arrington emphasized the pressing need to tackle wasteful and erroneous expenditures that continue to burden American taxpayers.

Reflecting on the persistent problem of financial mismanagement, Chairman Arrington highlighted a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, which revealed staggering losses of taxpayer dollars ranging from $233 billion to $521 billion annually. He expressed concern over the escalating scale of financial damage inflicted by fraud and improper payments, stating that the situation has only worsened over time.

Chairman Arrington underscored the imperative for concrete steps to combat this issue, stating, "We need to stop just pointing out the scale of the problem... we need 'a little less talk and a lot more action.'" He outlined a forthcoming plan by the House Budget Committee to address improper payments, focusing on key federal programs responsible for a significant portion of erroneous expenditures.

The proposed plan aims to realign incentives for states and agencies to actively recover funds lost to fraud and improper payments, as well as to reform the Congressional Budget Office's scoring methods to accurately assess the long-term savings of anti-fraud legislation. Additionally, the plan includes measures to enhance oversight of new and emergency spending to minimize fraudulent activities.

Chairman Arrington warned of the dire consequences of inaction, projecting that without reform, the federal government could squander an additional $2 trillion in improper payments over the next decade. He emphasized the need to restore fiscal integrity by taking decisive actions against financial abuses, stating, "Every dollar lost to improper payments and fraud represents a theft from the American people."

Under the leadership of Chairman Arrington, the House Budget Committee is committed to reducing improper payments by 50 percent through its FY 2025 budget resolution, aiming to achieve $1 trillion in savings over the next decade. The Committee's relentless focus on fiscal accountability underscores its dedication to rooting out wasteful spending and ensuring transparency and accountability in government programs.

As Chairman Arrington's call for action reverberates in Washington, the urgency to address improper payments and fraud in government spending has never been more apparent. It is a clarion call for policymakers to move beyond rhetoric and prioritize tangible solutions to safeguard taxpayer dollars and uphold fiscal responsibility.
