WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 18, Representative Jodey Arrington (TX-19) voted in support of H.Con.Res. 40, expressing support for local law enforcement officers and condemning efforts to defund or dismantle local law enforcement agencies.
“The Left’s radical push to defund and dismantle the police has emboldened criminals across the country and led to disaster in Democrat-run blue cities. Today, Congress has voted to recognize and support the individuals who put their lives on the line to protect American citizens," said Rep. Arrington.
Background:
- This concurrent resolution recognizes local law enforcement officers and condemns calls to defund or abolish the police.
- Rep Arrington has introduced legislation to protect law enforcement officers, hold rioters accountable, and restore order throughout the nation by increasing penalties for rioting and assaulting federal officers.
- The David Dorn Act of 2023 doubles the maximum imprisonment for rioting in the US code, 18 USC Section 210, and establishes a mandatory fine.
- The Patrick Underwood Federal Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2023 increases the penalties for assault on a federal officer in the US code, 18 USC Section 111, by heightening the fines and establishing mandatory imprisonment for assault with a deadly weapon.
