South Plains nonprofits receive $1.6 million in CARES Act funding

$1.6 million in aid has been granted to nonprofits to assist South Plains residents with through the COVID-19 crisis.

The Community Foundation of Western Texas and the local United Way recently teamed up and raised funds to create rapid release grants. The effort is working through the South Plains COVID-19 Response Fund.

Grants were given to address the needs of individuals, families and communities that were severely impacted by the coronavirus lockdowns. Many in the area have suffered from the economic consequences of the virus.

According to United Way, 50 organizations have received grants totaling more than $1.6 million in three months. Records indicate that $464,000 was targeted toward food assistance; $416,000 went to rent and utility support; and $320,000 supported child care and other youth program efforts. An additional $208,000 helped with medical bills due to the coronavirus outbreak.
