Washington, D.C. - Chairman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) stood alongside other GOP lawmakers in a press conference today, addressing the crisis at the Southern Border and expressing support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott's efforts to defend the state's sovereignty.
Arrington, who introduced legislation in June 2021 reaffirming states' right to secure their own borders, emphasized the failure of the Biden Administration to address the border crisis. He stated, "Not only has this commander in chief, this derelict president, failed to enforce the laws of the land, abdicated his chief responsibility to provide for a common defense, he has unilaterally surrendered control of our border to terrorist drug cartels."
The congressman highlighted the obstructive actions taken by President Biden to impede the efforts of border states in dealing with the influx of migrants. Arrington questioned the ability of states to defend their borders and protect their citizens when the federal government fails to do so. He referred to the Constitution, stating, "The Constitution is explicit and unequivocal in answering that question. Article 4, Section 4 says that every state is guaranteed protection against an invasion by their federal government."
Arrington also pointed out that Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution grants states the sovereign power to defend their borders and protect their citizens in the face of an imminent danger that "will not permit delay." He firmly believed that it is not only the right but the duty of the state to protect its citizens.
In closing, Arrington made three key points. Firstly, he emphasized that Texas, a state that fought and won its independence, will not be a passive victim to a failed federal government. Secondly, he asserted that the people of Texas will not seek permission from President Biden to protect their citizens and defend their border. Finally, he stated that not only is the Constitution on their side, but the American people are as well.
The press conference served as a platform for GOP lawmakers, including Chairman Jodey Arrington, to express their concerns about the border crisis and show support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott's efforts to defend the state's sovereignty. The event highlighted the growing frustration with the Biden Administration's handling of the situation and the determination of states to take action to protect their borders and citizens.
