WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 17, Representative Jodey Arrington (TX-19) voted in support of H.R. 2494, the Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2023.

“The radical Left’s soft-on-crime policies and complete disregard for the chaos at our southern border have resulted in violence, illegal immigration, and drug cartel activity threatening our families and the safety of our communities. H.R. 2494, the POLICE Act, would protect those that enforce the law and make assaulting a police officer a deportable offense. We must allow the police to do their jobs and remind criminals that there are consequences for their actions,” said Rep. Arrington.

Background:

The POLICE Act:

• Ensures that any non-citizen who assaults a law enforcement officer is subject to deportation.
• Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to make an assault on a law enforcement officer by an alien a deportable offense.
  • To qualify as a deportable offense, the offense must be committed while the law enforcement officer is performing official duties, because of the performance of his/her official duties, or because of his/her status as a law enforcement officer.
• Under this act, “assault” has the meaning as defined in the jurisdiction where the act occurred.
• The term “law enforcement officer” is a person who is authorized by the law to apprehend, arrest, or prosecute an individual for any criminal violation, or is a firefighter or other first responder.
• Rep Arrington has introduced legislation to protect law enforcement officers, hold rioters accountable, and restore order throughout the nation by increasing penalties for rioting and assaulting federal officers.
