WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a Veterans Affairs (VA) improvements package which included Representative Arrington’s VA E-notification Enhancement Act. This straightforward, common-sense bill would allow the VA to provide education assistance documents in an electronic format.
“In 2023, the VA should be able to contact veterans regarding their education benefits in the most efficient and effective way possible. The VA E-Notification Enhancement Act will reduce the VA’s reliance on snail-mail to notify veterans of important benefits and will give veterans peace of mind that the VA can reach them,” said Rep. Arrington. “It’s an honor to see this piece of legislation included in this package. I believe this policy will truly help veterans across our nation.”
Background:
On February 24, 2023, Rep. Arrington joined Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) to introduce the VA E-Notification Enhancement Act. This legislation requires the VA to provide educational assistance documents (such as those related to the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill) in an electronic format, such as email.
The VA traditionally uses U.S. mail to provide individuals with their certificate of eligibility and award letters regarding receiving educational assistance. While there are some veterans that still need to use the mail-in method, most veterans can receive these notifications. In recognition of some veterans’ desire to continue receiving traditional mail, this legislation contains an opt-out provision from electronic communication.
