The City of Lubbock has proposed a budget with a property tax rate that is 1.645 cents per $100 valuation lower than last year’s budget.

The slight decrease follows two consecutive years of increases in FY 2018-19 and FY 2019-20, according to the City's Chamber of Commerce.

The city is proposing adding a new staff position for a full-time neighborhood planner who will focus mostly on enhancing and developing North and East Lubbock neighborhoods as well as funding for project costs. The proposed budget also includes a master plan for the parks systems with a major focus on the Canyon Lakes area. The Chamber has been advocating for development of the Canyon Lakes area since its Imagine Lubbock Together initiative launched

Approximately $10 million will be allocated for street maintenance. The city is also enhancing funding to pave five dirt road projects within the city limits.

Nearly $1 million has been proposed for a new tornado siren system. Lubbock is the largest city in “Tornado Alley” that doesn’t have a system.
