The Coffee Memorial Blood Center is looking for plasma donors who have recovered from the COVID-19 virus.
Those who have recovered from the virus can donate convalescent plasma as an experimental treatment option for those who are in a critical state due to the coronavirus, according to the center.
The clinic is at 7500 Wallace Blvd. in Amarillo.
As of April 26, Texas reported 25,297 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 663 deaths. Potter County has 333 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
As the large global pandemic continues to spread, many patients are requiring medical assistance and hospitalization. Once a patient contracts the virus, several things happen within the human body. The changes are devastating on the body, not just the lungs. The coronavirus is a respiratory disease, so that means that it typically affects the lungs first. The other symptoms include a fever, cough and shortness of breath.
The symptoms from the virus usually show up in the first two weeks or less. While most cases are mild, many are severe enough to cause acute respiratory distress syndrome, which will end up with a patient in critical condition, according to Health Line.
Being this is a novel virus, not much is known. So it is up to scientists and medical professionals to uncover different ways to help a patient overcome the illness. At this time, the transfer of convalescent plasma is an experimental option for treatment.
If you have recovered from the coronavirus and are willing to donate plasma, please register online here.
