Texas Tech announced on Apr. 21 that its No. 2/5 ranked softball team will embark on its last road trip of the regular season, facing UTEP and No. 24/RV Arizona State this week. The Red Raiders will play a doubleheader against UTEP starting Wednesday at 6 p.m. Central Time before traveling to Tempe for a three-game series against Arizona State beginning Friday.
This road stretch gives Texas Tech an opportunity to clinch the Big 12 Regular Season title away from home. Winning two out of three games against Arizona State would secure at least a share of the title, while sweeping all three would win it outright.
Junior Desirae Spearman returns to her hometown of El Paso for the UTEP games, where she is expected to have strong support from family and friends. Spearman has contributed nine home runs and 39 RBI this season with a .345 batting average.
Other standout players include Mihyia Davis, who leads active players nationally in hits (323), at-bats (794), and stolen bases (131). NiJaree Canady recently surpassed 1,000 career strikeouts and is one of only two active players with that milestone along with over 90 wins. Kaitlyn “KT” Terry leads the team in batting average (.521) and has set school records including a current streak of reaching base in 34 consecutive games.
Head coach Gerry Glasco remains undefeated in conference series since his tenure at Louisiana, now holding a record of 65-0 after rebounding from losses by winning subsequent games in each series. Senior Jackie Lis has reached her career-best home run tally with fourteen this season, ranking fifth among active players nationally.
The Red Raiders have already broken several program records this year—ranging from home runs to no-hitters—and are poised to challenge more as postseason approaches.
