LUBBOCK – A special prosecutor has been requested to look into allegations that Texas Tech University is illegally withholding public records as they pertain to former head football coach Mike Leach.
Dolcefino Consulting represents Leach, whom Texas Tech fired in 2009 for allegedly mistreating a player. The firm claims Texas Tech is illegally withholding the information, according to Everything Lubbock.
A lawsuit Dolcefino filed in January 2018 seeks records be turned over by Texas Tech and the Texas Attorney General. Lubbock County District Attorney Sunshine Stanek has requested that a special prosecutor investigate the allegations.
Stanek forwarded requests to the administrative judge for the region and asked that she be excused from the case because of a possible conflict of interest and that a special prosecutor be appointed, Everything Lubbock said.
Leach, now head football coach at Mississippi State University, said that Texas Tech owes him money for breaching his contract. Leach was fired in 2009 after reports of his alleged treatment of receiver Adam James, who was suffering from a concussion, according to Bleacher Report.
Leach denies the allegations. According to his Twitter post on Aug. 26, 2019, Texas Tech refuses to release documents and memos. Leach maintains he is owed $1.6 million in guaranteed income and a $800,000 retention bonus, according to Bleacher Report.
“Texas Tech still has not paid me for 2009, after firing me based upon false allegations. Now officers at Tech are refusing to release the documents and memos. What could they possibly be afraid of? Proof of their false and slanderous smear campaign? The public has a right know,” Leach said in the Twitter post dated Aug. 26, 2109, @Coach_Leach.
Leach was head coach with Texas Tech University from 2000 to 2009.
