House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington said on Apr. 7 that Republicans plan to use the reconciliation process to fully fund U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), invest in national security, and address fraud in federal programs during an appearance on Mornings with Maria on Fox Business.
The discussion of these priorities comes as Congress considers ways to manage federal spending while addressing key policy issues. The House Budget Committee is responsible for overseeing federal spending, developing budget resolutions, and promoting fiscal responsibility, according to the official website.
Arrington explained that Republicans have two opportunities for reconciliation, which could be used separately or combined. “We have two reconciliation opportunities. So, whether we do the DHS funding and then go to 3.0 reconciliation, or we do them in a combination, it’s obviously support defense first. Secondly, it’s the ‘War on Fraud’ and reducing taxpayer-funded waste and fraud. It’s also affordability issues on health care and housing,” Arrington said.
He also addressed efforts to reduce wasteful spending while maintaining investments in defense: “I expect that we continue to do what we’ve done since Republicans have been in control of the House: bring down the wasteful spending and the bloated bureaucracy, but make investments in defense, which is the most important job of the federal government… Every 1% of GDP over the 10-year budget window is $3 trillion in deficit reduction.” Arrington further commented on political disagreements surrounding border security funding: “Then we have to pivot today and deal with the recalcitrance of Democrats who are continuing to hold the American people and our homeland security hostage over their ridiculous and dangerous demands to effectively defund ICE and Border Patrol… Let’s use budget reconciliation—give us the simple majority in the Senate… especially in this critical time of conflict with Iran.”
The House Budget Committee includes members from other key committees such as Ways and Means as well as Appropriations according to its official website. The committee has influenced budget management through its use of reconciliation procedures as reported by its official website, collaborates with the Congressional Budget Office for independent analyses according to its official website, prepares annual budget resolutions and sets guidelines for spending targets.
Looking ahead, these priorities may shape how Congress approaches upcoming fiscal challenges as leaders debate strategies for funding government operations while addressing concerns about national security.
