As the government shutdown reaches its first week, House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) released a statement criticizing Democrats’ actions on government funding and immigration policy.

Arrington pointed out that Democrats previously supported 13 clean continuing appropriations bills under President Biden but are now rejecting a similar measure. He said, “Democrats voted for 13 clean continuing appropriations bills (CR) under Biden. Now, they’re rejecting a clean CR and providing a completely unserious counteroffer of $1.5 trillion in new spending, a repeal of work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients, and protections for illegal immigrants receiving taxpayer-funded health care.”

He further referenced Democratic positions on health care for undocumented immigrants: “Remember, in 2020, every Democratic presidential candidate promised health care for illegals, then Biden expanded Obamacare to illegals by executive order, and then 43 Democrat Senators voted AGAINST a ban on funding health care for illegals just a few months ago. When people show you who they are, believe them. Democrats don’t have the time or credibility to rebrand themselves as anything other than what they’ve become: open-border radicals.”

The statement comes as negotiations over government funding continue without resolution.
